40 years later…
It is a great privilege for a man to be able to participatein the reincarnation of a cultural endeavor 40 years after taking part in the very establishment there of. It was a different time, back in 1969, a different system when a group of talented enthusiastic cartoonists gathered around the journal of humor and satire “Osten”, (that was reestablished by themselves in1966), decided to dedicate their lifelong professional commitment to cartoons. Without having great experience, impressed by the immense solidarity selflessly offered by the world to their hometown Skopje after the earthquake, decided to repay the world by organizing the World Gallery of Cartoons. The Gallery made Skopje a center that embraced the cartoonists from around the globe once a year, so they can flash their pricks of humor and satire, their critique of human stupidity, but also the humane messages for peace, for a better and more civilized world. Funded mainly by the Assembly of the city of Skopje, and later on by the Ministry of Culture of Macedonia, the World Gallery of Cartoons in Skopje, for the next 37 years grew into a “Mecca” of contemporary satiric thought, and similarly became a “higher education facility” as well as inspiration for those having a lifelong commitment to humor and satire as a hobby or a profession. The citizensof Skopje and Macedonia were granted a major window, wide open to the world for personal growth and to the Macedonian authors for their personal affirmation. However, unpredictable things can happen which might impede progressive phenomenon. The shift of generations and lack of ability to cope in harsh transition circumstances made the Gallery in apt and contributed to its disappearance from the world map of cultural events. Fortunately, for a relatively short period of time, the new period and new social system offered new solutions enabling the Gallery to rise and reemerge so we can all enjoy its even more glorious comeback. The visual artist Mice Jankulovski, today the owner of the brand “Osten”, this year invested enormous efforts and funds to restore the Gallery and restate the dove of peace let by the cartoonist of El Salvador Jose Bernardo Pacheco – NANDO at the Museum of Contemporary Art back in 1969, hence promoting the symbol of the Skopje World Gallery of Cartoons. The dove continues to fly today to the mutual joy of all admirers of humor through drawings. The mass participation to this year’s renewed Gallery speaks of the unrelenting authority enjoyed by this event throughout the world, speaks of agreat number of names of young cartoonists across the globe, speaks of a huge number of new countries - contestants, and of the fact that today’s communication-related globalized world stands facing the same or similar issues. The solutions imposed by the cartoonists through their simple and distinct drawings are their contribution to the attempts of a more pervasive humanization. In their quest for truth, the Macedonian cartoonists continue to prevail at the midst of high quality cultural events.
